जलवायु एवं समुद्रीय विज्ञान विषय के अन्तर्गत मानव सहित समस्त जीव पर्यावरण की उपज हैं। स्वच्छ पर्यावरण में ही मानव एवं अन्य जीव स्वस्थ रह सकते हैं। भौतिकता की अन्धी दौड़ में आधुनिक मानव ने जाने-अनजाने पर्यावरण को गम्भीर हानि पहुंचाई है। ओजोन क्षरण, विश्व तापन, अम्ल वर्षा व बढ़ती प्राकृतिक आपदाएं इसके दुष्परिणाम हैं। पर्यावरण प्रदुषण व पारिस्थितिक असन्तुलन अब मात्र स्थानीय या राष्ट्रीय समस्या नहीं है, अपितु समस्त भू-मण्डल इसकी चपेट में है।
